About Dramatically Yours Dramatherapy

Back in 2012, as I sat between stacks of biochemistry textbooks, preparing for my Masters in Biochemistry entrance exam, I realized my mind wasn’t fully in it. It kept drifting back to the fascinating world of Psychology, which I had briefly encountered during my undergrad days. Feeling drawn to it, I decided to open my laptop and search for Masters in Psychology courses. That’s when I stumbled upon a program in Counselling Psychology. I decided to take a shot in the dark and applied. To my incredible luck, a kind soul at the Madras School of Social Work noticed my persistence and gave me the chance to pursue my dream.

As my Masters degree was wrapping up in 2014, I found myself signing up for a theatre workshop series that was spearheaded by a dear friend. The impact that this workshop series had on my mental well-being was so profound, much like the impact that my time as a Bharathanatyam dance had on me, that I began to dream about combining the worlds of counselling and theatre. When I shared this idea with my friend who had introduced me to the wonders of theatre - he told me that what I was envisioning already existed and was called Dramatherapy. Although my bubble of creating a new field was burst, I was thrilled to discover this existing path. So, once again I found myself applying for a Masters degree. But this time, I was setting out to the University of Derby in the UK.

My time in the UK while pursuing the Masters in Dramatherapy was perhaps the best two years of my life. The course taught me how to blend creativity and healing, and I was able to put that knowledge into practice. Despite all the years I thought I knew myself, I was in for a shock. There was so much learning, unlearning, and relearning to do. To this day, I am deeply grateful to every single person I met during those two years - whether they were part of the course or part of my experience living in the UK.

The years from 2016 to 2019 were also a significant learning experience for me. During that time, I pursued another Masters degree, this one in Forensic Psychology. Balancing my studies with the need to give extra attention and care to my mental health was challenging, but it was an important period of further growth and self-discovery, which I only believed would help me in my role as a Mental Health Practitioner.

In early 2020, I returned to India with grand plans to regarding my future as a Mental Health Practitioner. But just a few weeks later, the world went into lockdown due to COVID-19. I quickly realised that while my plans would need to be adapted, they could still come to life and that they would have to be virtual for the time being. It was at this time that Dramatically Yours Dramatherapy was born.

Dramatically Yours Dramatherapy was founded with the intention, hope, and commitment to offering a unique and engaging approach to mental health. My aim was to create a space that:

  • Is infused with the transformative power of expressive arts, fostering personal growth, emotional healing, and creative expression.

  • Provides a safe and non-judgmental environment, ensuring that everyone feels supported and valued.

  • Breaks the myths surrounding mental health, promoting a more open and understanding perspective.

I hope this space that I am holding for you, filled with creativity and healing through the power of drama and expressive arts, becomes as much yours as it is mine, making it - Dramatically Yours.
